Blue Bike Share Program Launches in New Orleans

You might have seen a lot of the color blue around New Orleans recently. On December 5th, a program called Blue Bikes launched as the first bike share program in the city. The bikes painted their namesake blue, run on $8 hourly ride rentals and $15 monthly passes. A discount $20 annual pass is available for residents who qualify for public assistance.

To take a bike for a spin, riders have to register on the website or mobile app to receive their account and pin numbers. The pin they receive is entered on the bike and unlocks the device for use. The bikes can be returned at any station in the city and to any public bike rack for a $1 fee.

Many locals seem wary of the operation because they believe it is driven mostly for tourism, but these bikes are also for local people to get to jobs, meet up with friends, go out and see the town and explore the city differently. However, bike accidents are so common in New Orleans; it’s important to remember bike safety tips and bike laws.

In recent years, Louisiana had the second most bicycle deaths per capita in the United States, according to Governing magazine. Since 1970, the bicycle deaths in the united states on the rise rather than the decline. Unfortunately, the prevalence of cell phones and other distractions has made the streets war zones whether you on a car or a bike.
